Building Mozilla with VC7 French

If you want to build Mozilla with a french version of VC7, you need to apply the following patch to your tree. The -v call on the compiler differs between the en-US and the fr-FR versions :-/ Thanks Microsoft....

Composer problems

Until today, 1.5a and 1.5a++ builds did not show the grabber for absolutely positioned elements nor Inline Table UI because I forgot to update the relevant packager/* files. This is fixed. But I just discovered another very ugly bug: table insertion is horked. Working on it.

Update: apparently the last nightly build was built at a bad time for Composer... I just built a fresh tree and the bug does not appear.

hype

I finally found some time to see Matrix Reloaded. And I must say I found it VERY disappointing. I did not like it. I was about to leave the theatre when the crowd is dancing after Morpheus's address to Zion's people. Only Lambert Wilson, the merovingian, is an interesting character because it brings an Inspector Clouseau thing into the movie. Five seconds of smile. Hey, did you notice that when the Architect talks about the grotesque of human nature, the images of Hitler and George W. Bush appear together on the wall of screens behind him?

Not sure I am hardly waiting for the end of the saga.

Unilog

The proof

" America Online on Thursday named a new chief technology officer as it heats up its efforts in broadband, wireless and other areas. The company has tapped John McKinley, a former CTO of Merrill Lynch and GE Capital, to direct its technology initiatives. As AOL's chief technology strategist, he will also oversee the teams in charge of product engineering, network infrastructure and data centres, and internal business systems and computing. "

Now that's clear, AOL is not an ISP, that's a bank. And a bad one.

Voila.

Paul Festa is not alone

No, Paul Festa, the journalist for C|Net who wrote so many bullshits about Netscape and Mozilla, is not alone. The french online magazine Transfert.net, who tried to interview me by phone and email about last week's layoffs, is another good example of what journalism SHOULD NOT be...

Gawwwwd. According to this, AOL started commercializing - and was using!!!! - the Netscape navigator in 1995...

This says AOL started the Mozilla project. How can someone calling himself a journalist write such bullshits

False again. AOL will provide $2,000,000 of funding over the next two years, that's quite different from what Transfert.net wrote!

False again. Well, Transfert.net should focus itself on the dismantling of its journalistic team, since it also faces critics for its lame quality.

Update: because of the current post, Transfert.net has updated his article. Congrats. Not Kidding. I still remember very clearly how Paul Festa welcomed Mozilla community's comments about all his mistakes. Journalists able to recognize they were mistaken are rare enough to be applauded.

Last of the mohicans

As I said a few days ago, the legal process for a layoff takes time here, and is more formal than in the US. I will have my meeting with HR next friday morning. I will be officially notified of the layoff during that meeting and we will have to leave the office in the days after that meeting. It means that technically, I am still employed by Netscape until that day, that the european sherpas of Netscape (Tristan, Peter, Jan, Kai, Adam and myself) are the last employees officially still working on Netscape since no task reassignment was notified to us. The last of the mohicans. Eh.

Innovation at AOL dead with Netscape?

Apparently, Clayton Lewis, former Technical Director of Netscape and Vice-President of the Innovation Center of AOL, was laid off with the remains of Netscape last week. Warning, I have no confirmation yet and have no clue about what happened to the people in his org, including a few we know very well. Clayton was a strong supporter of Gecko, and it really seems that a guy called David-the-liquidator is hunting all Gecko supporters wherever they are. I'll spit on his grave the day the Time Warner's ax falls on his AOL head.

Thanks...

...to the dozens of people who sent me a mail about Netscape's end.

Sorry...

...for the five journalists from France, UK and US who called me at home for an interview about it. I was away for summer vacation and I was not ready to answer questions since I am technically still employed by Netscape/AOL (the layoff process takes time here).

Sorry again...

...for the mailer-daemon errors if you sent me a mail to glazman@netscape.com. AOL, forgetting that such an action is illegal here since I am still employed, cut our email and AIM accounts the 16th of July. I can now be reached at daniel AT glazman DOT org

Sorry once more....

...for the W3C: AOL did not leave us time to unsubscribe from W3C lists or even notify the Groups we belong too. AOL participation into ECMA and W3C is almost totally gone now. I guess this is a good hint about how AOL-Time Warner sees the importance of underlying technologies for its business model.

R.I.P.

Netscape hired me three years ago, AOL laid me off today (technically, having a french contract of employment, I am still employed; we don't throw away people in ten seconds here. We take thirty seconds, that's cleaner). AOL axed Netscape at the same time. People, it's over. Netscape is dead. Nothing to see here.

Want to hire me?

You are looking for an experienced software engineer, actively working on SGML/HTML/XML engines and editors since 1989, active member of a few W3C Working Groups since 1997, module owner of Mozilla Composer/Editor, able to work remotely for any organization from Paris (France), and even, why not, able to form a local team ? Drop me a mail at daniel AT glazman DOT org, thanks!
