Le CNE est mort aujourd'hui
Le 21 mars dernier, je notais ici même que le CPE était illégal, car contrevenant à la convention 158 de 1982 de l'Organisation Internationale du Travail, ratifiée et signée par la France. Ce soir, le Tribunal des Prud'hommes de Longjumeau a requalifié un CNE en CDI exactement sur la base de cette convention 158, en notant que le CNE qui dispense l'employeur de fournir un motif de licenciement est inapplicable en France, et donc nul. Logiquement, le contrat de travail en question a donc été requalifié en CDI.
Il est désormais inutile de combattre le CNE dans la rue ; il est juridiquement mort. Je félicite chaleureusement Dominique de Villepin pour un succès rarement atteint au cours de la Vème République.
Tout cela pose tout de même une question importante : si un branquignol d'informaticien dans mon genre est capable d'avoir vu que CPE et CNE violaient des traités internationaux obligeant la France, comment se fait-il que le gouvernement ne l'a pas vu, ou pire n'en a pas tenu compte ? C'est au mieux une négligence impardonnable, au pire une trahison. Et c'est dans les deux cas honteux.

I will in a very near future submit a patch against the 1.8.0 branch for xulrunner adding a <systrayicon/> element to the toolkit. The patch will offer that for Win32 only at this time. This element offers three methods:
minimizeWindowToTray() minimizeAllWindowsToTray(); restoreFromTray();
I guess no explanation is needed here. The element will accept the following attributes:
contextwill contain the id of a popup element. If this attribute is present on the element, a context click on the tray icon will show the popup above the systray.tooltiptext; this one is hard to understand... If absent, the default will be the title of the xul window that minimized to tray.- most common event handler attributes
In addition, a few new attributes will be available on the root element (window for instance) indicating if the normal minimization should minimize to tray or not, if closing the application should in fact minimize to tray or really close, and the number of clicks on the systray icon needed to restore the window(s).

Thanks to Mook and the other original author of MinimizeToTray who accepted to tri-license their code for the benefit of all. The c++ part compiled without problem at all, but I am going to completely revamp the JS part.

Internet Explorer is a dead albatross

That's the subtitle of last John Dvorak's article in PC Magazine. I don't really agree with him and I am going to explain why below: but not right now, I have more urgent things to do. Stay tuned, this article may grow a lot in the very near future.
- I think it can now be safely said, in hindsight, that Microsoft's entry into the browser business and its subsequent linking of the browser into the Windows operating system looks to be the worst decision - and perhaps the biggest, most costly gaffe - the company ever made. I call it the Great Microsoft Blunder.

Ah. I previously though it was the lack of interest of Microsoft in the Internet, and I am not sure Windows Live and Office Live are not a much bigger blunder than that...
- It looks like a whopper that keeps whacking the company. The most recent bash came from the Eolas v. Microsoft patent suit over aspects of the ActiveX usage in Internet Explorer. Microsoft lost and was slapped with a $521 million settlement.

Oh come on. Eolas should never have won that case, and we all know it. Some key people did not say a word about it only because it's Microsoft and because they found quite funny to see the Giant caught in that mess, or because nobody ever pinged them. And we all know the whole US patent system on software is a mess that should be entirely reorganized. Otherwise...
- If the problem is not weird legal cases against the company, then it's the incredible losses in productivity at the company from the never-ending battle against spyware, viruses, and other security problems. All the work that has to go into keeping the browser afloat is time that could have been better spent on making Vista work as first advertised.

At some point, Microsoft was the only company actively participating in all working groups of the World Wide Web Consortium. CSS would not be the success we know it is without Microsoft. So what Microsoft did with MSIE helped selling Microsoft software solutions for the Web: databases, operating systems, everything. If you look at the financial figures of the MSIE team, sure, it's a 0 and a big number. But the TREMENDOUS force of Microsoft is its ability to build a local center of loss to redistribute incomes on all other divisions. In other terms, the MSIE team acts - as always acted as an R&D center in terms of finances.

Again, MSIE is the entry point for other Microsoft products. And Microsoft has a lot of customers complaining about the age of IE6. They need IE7, they need to provide their customers with an in-house solution. Leaving that field on windows-based computers is just not a option they can politically afford, it would be an horrific signal sent to the customers. But Dvorak is right on one point : people will still buy Windows if MSIE is not in it.
- Of course we already know that this will never happen, since Microsoft is a creature of habit. So it will forever be plagued by its greatest blunder ever. Have fun, boys.

So Microsoft just launched http://www.ieaddons.com/, a web site à la addons.mozilla.org based on Cnet's download.com. There are 526 add-ons at this time:

It has to be noticed that all these extensions are NOT specific to IE7. They were all (or almost all) made for IE6, meaning that according to Microsoft we have 526 registered add-ons for IE in 5 years of existence of the product. Precisely at the same moment, addons.mozilla.org has 1634 extensions for Firefox, increasing daily.
Even if I don't like the quite poor design of the web site, I have to admit that using CNet's download.com is interesting from at least one point of view : all submitted add-ons are permanently checked with antiviral and antispyware tools... If addons.m.o does not have that, it should probably be added.
But I'll leave the last word of this post to someone called Xepol who posted a comment on the IEBlog:
I can't even begin to describe how hard it is to write IE addons. Firefox clearly doesn't have this problem as everyone and their dog have written plugins.
I've said before that IE needs clear, simple dotNet based surfaces we can code against. FireFox also has Javascript plugins, and that's got to be a must also.
IE's plugins have languished because they are so hard to code for. Just look at the files presented. Download managers, which run OUTSIDE of IE, activeX components that have run inside of IE since forever.
MS makes it too damn hard for just anyone to write a plugin. Just getting a toolbar can be a major episode, seriously language bound to C++ requiring you support numerous, poorly documented interfaces.
We need better,simpler APIs to code against. It is great that there is so much power available, but the simpliest example of a button labeled hello world requires that we know and exploit ALL of that power. The curve is much MUCH too steep.
I would love to code a replacement for the quicklinks toolbar, because it doesn't work the way I want, but I'm a delphi programmer. There are NO succesful delphi examples (the one attempt at a generic framework for delphi results in total hell!)
No no, no, a THOUSAND TIMES no, this should NOT be the problem it is. Simplify, simplify, simplify.
And PLEASE improve the system so that when developing you don't have to reboot or crash your whole damn shell over and over and over just to test and recompile. Plugins should be flushed the pico-second they are turned off.
I can't imagine how you got to this point? Imagine having to continually restart word or visual studio every time you tweaked a script! MS has the skills, it needs to be applied.
Let us write dotNet assemblies, let us write javascript/vb script plugins, reduce the language barriers, and DOCUMENT the interfaces properly.
Not everything requires the complexity of a rocket launch.
Look at the plugins for Firefox, see what real plugins can do.
PLEASE!!!!
Until then, the ie add on site will just be a repository of antique software without any real new innovation (I would be suprise if you get ANY submissions for plugins written recently)

I just succeeded opening a Wengo session from our xulrunner-based application. Nothing demoable yet, it's only a log. But it's very cool.

- I still need an event notifying me when a given window is moved by the user on the desktop.
- an official (ie available on ftp.mozilla.org) "developer edition" of xulrunner with venkman and inspector so a xulrunner-based app author only has to call window.openDialog() to launch them.

Quand la bagnole de son mari Jean-Pierre Stirbois a rencontré un arbre sur la route de Dreux, coûtant la vie au plus prometteur - et à un des plus fanatiques - lieutenant de Jean-Marie Le Pen, je n'ai pu retenir comme pas mal de mes copains à l'X à l'époque un vibrant "un salaud de moins". J'ai croisé MFS, Marie-France Stirbois, dans les bureaux d'AOL Time Warner à Neuilly en 2002 ou 2003. Elle y venait pour une interview politique, peut-être pour CNN. Sous des dehors affables, c'était un serpent. Et je l'avais regardé comme un serpent, ce qui l'avait visiblement surprise et choquée. Elle ne devait peut-être pas s'attendre à ce que quelqu'un la reconnaisse et se permette un tel regard. Sous des dehors démocratiques - elle a été élue tant à l'Assemblée Nationale qu'au Parlement Européen - c'était une antidémocrate vraie et franche. Une facho pure et dure, parfaitement disposer à utiliser tous les recours de la démocratie pour détruire la démocratie. Je ne la regretterai pas.

Belgitude
Il y a sur ce blog la catégorie Franchouillardises, il y manque probablement la catégorie Histoires Belges... J'étais ce week-end en Belgique. Après un petit tour par Gand, j'ai rendu une courte visite à de la famille, dans un endroit que je nommerai pas mais qu'il suffira de savoir très campagnard, avec plein de zones de repos des migrateurs. Des cygnes, des oies, la totale. Dimanche, nous découvrons dans le jardin un chat mort. Un assez beau chat, pas vieux du tout. Aucune trace de blessure. Il s'est allongé sur le côté et est mort là, comme ça. N'importe où ailleurs en Europe, on fait assez attention aux chats ou aux furets qui décèdent de cette manière-là. La probabilité est certes très très très faible, mais il se pourrait qu'il ai boulotté un oiseau malade du H5N1 (ou une autre forme moins grave de grippe aviaire) et en soit mort. En Allemagne, en France, aux Pays-Bas, on fait attention à ce genre de choses. Pas en Belgique... Verbatim de ma discussion avec la police via un appel téléphonique au 100 :
- Bonjour madame, nous venons de trouver un char mort, apparemment de maladie, dans notre jardin. Qui doit-on prévenir pour le faire enlever ?
- Ah mais nous n'intervenons que sur la voie publique monsieur. Ce chat est mort dans votre jardin vous dites ?
- Euh oui, ça change quelque chose pour le danger de le ramasser sans équipement de protection ? Au moins des gants et un masque que nous n'avons pas ?
- Ah mais dans ce cas, nous ne pouvons intervenir. Il faut le faire vous-même, au revoir monsieur.
A ce stade, on a tous un rictus d'incrédulité quand le téléphone sonne. C'est de nouveau les flics.
- Rebonjour monsieur, c'est la police, j'avais oublié de vous préciser qu'il y a des services payants pour cela.
On est morts de rire. On rit jaune, clairement. J'essaye alors d'appeler le commissariat local de police de proximité. Malheureusement je tombe sur la même personne que j'enguirlande un peu...

Commentaires sur les commentaires
Laurent, puis François, puis Tristan se tripotent le neurone sur les commentaires. Pour ou contre, fromage ou dessert, blog ou pas blog, bulles ou pas bulles. D'abord, on se fout que ça soit un "blog" ou pas. Ici, c'est un journal pas intime intime de toute manière Je note juste que le nombre de chieurs et de spam a augmenté sur les blogs en 2004/2005 exactement comme il avait augmenté dans les newsgroups en 1994. On n'y peut presque rien, sauf à supprimer la possibilité de poster librement des commentaires.
Par exemple ce matin, pris d'un accès de foi en la bonté de l'Homme (je venais de me taper deux heures de comptabilité, ça secoue un individu), j'ai ré-autorisé les commentaires sur inFoRmatique. Je viens de les re-supprimer... Entre temps, 27 spams étaient arrivés ! Il semble qu'inFoRmatique soit répertorié dans des listes de spammeurs de blogs. Bon bon bon.
Ici, sur le glazblog, je refuse de supporter les chieurs et les donneurs de leçons soit-disant bien-pensants. Et il est hors de question que je tolère les insultes ou les propos tombant sous le coup de la Loi. Je me les suis trop coltinés dans ma vie professionnelle pour les accepter ici. Ici, c'est MA PREROGATIVE de les envoyer bouler quand JE le veux.
Donc la règle est claire : j'ouvre et je ferme les commentaires comme JE le désire, et je censure sans vergogne aucune les propos qui m'emmerdent. Je suis chez moi, point.
Quant aux trackbacks, j'ai eu également des trackbacks de spam malheureusement... Et donc pareil. Quand je vire les uns, je vire les autres.

Hixie has a short article I have been waiting for ten years. Long long long ago, I asked a well known HTTP expert why I had to "tag" my HTML content sent over the wire with Content-Type: text/html when /usr/bin/file is here to tell everyone it's HTML. I know this is a suboptimal solution, but let's be pragmatic here, Content-Type is a mess.
Content-Type is not dead, it was stillborn from the very beginning IMHO.

Xulrunner-based app's main window
I have added (on trunk for the time being, bsmedberg should add it to 1.8 soon) a new pref allowing to specify the features of the main window of a xulrunner-based app :
pref("toolkit.defaultChromeURI", "chrome://wengophone/content/wengophone.xul");
pref("toolkit.defaultChromeFeatures", "chrome,menubar,toolbar,status,resizable=no,dialog=no");
If this pref is not present, xulrunner defaults to "chrome,dialog=no,all".

Paf la clé
My dad is writing a new book in yiddish. He wrote the previous one with Microsoft Word 2000 and found a few annoying bugs when dealing with rtl text and styles.
I bought a license of MS Word 2003 for him but unfortunately bought it in en-US, completely forgetting that Word is not localizable in another language (yeah, that's called modern software). And he wants a french UI... So I installed Abiword and OOo for him, and tried to configure them for rtl use with a yiddish font.
Results : although its UI is perfectly customizable, Abiword is totally unusable with big documents imported from MS Word. I tried to import a very simple (in terms of styles) 200 pages yiddish document using one single font... The UI freezes so often it's not usable : takes 2 minutes to load, freezes when you resize the window, freezes when you scroll too fast.
OOo has no problem of that sort : loading the doc is fast, and it's easy to work with a 200+ pages doc. The UI customization is too complex, and not easily accessible to newbies ; in my opinion, it should be improved. But OOo Writer is definitely an excellent choice, and my father now uses it.
XULrunner is not the future
no, XULrunner is not the future ; it's the present : I have four work-in-progress apps based on xulrunner on my work computer... I have venkman installed everywhere, and I am going to need DOMI soon. I also had a few problems with the extensions manager, but overall it' super cool

Marrant, j'ai une légère impression de déjà-vu.
Villepin est complètement brûlé. Quant à l'image internationale de la France, entre le grand dépendeur d'andouilles de l'Elysée, cet abruti de Villepin à Matignon et le superbe Douste-Blabla au Quai d'Orsay, je me suis entendu dire qu'on parlait désormais de la France comme on parlait de l'Italie il y a 25 ans. Monsieur Jacques Chirac, bravo.

Je crois que Rivière raconte absolument n'importe quoi, exactement comme quand Charles Ton Lorenzi d'AOL à qui j'expliquais que le Wifi allais entrer dans tous les appartements me répondait que les solutions techniques étaient bien trop chères pour ça... Entre DSL et Wimax, le choix est le suivant :

Bon bon bon. Désolé il n'y a pas photo : le sans-fil est clairement disruptif dans les technos d'accès non seulement à l'Internet mais également dans les communications téléphoniques. Quand le Wimax sera là, tout le monde en voudra, et surtout tout le monde voudra en vendre. Le plaisir de se passer du boîtier modem/routeur, la simplicité de mise en oeuvre côté client, l'absence de besoin d'une ligne téléphonique. Tout cela ne se limitera CERTAINEMENT pas au laptops ; je vous fiche mon billet que tous les desktops résidentiels en voudront aussi.
Le Wireless sonne déjà le glas d'UMTS, et les jours de DSL sont comptés.

Pierre Chappaz, "fondateur de Kelkoo et patron d'un futur moteur de recherche (sic!!!!)", commet une tribune hebdomadaire dans Libé sur le Web, 2.0, 42 et tout ça. Et c'est consternant. Sérieusement, dans la série j'invite des grands noms francophones de la high-tech à causer, Jean-Louis Gassée faisait plus égocentrique mais surtout plus sérieux et mieux informé.

Bon ben voila. Je suis converti. Pas encore dans les faits réellement, mais mentalement je suis prêt. Ce fut un long cheminement, une montée vers la lumière et la vérité. Un reniement de mes anciens errements également. Pour tout dire, je me suis fourvoyé tellement d'années que je me demande comme j'ai pu vivre comme ça. Pourtant, nombreux sont ceux qui ont tenté de me porter la bonne parole... Je n'avais jamais cédé. Et tout d'un coup, j'ai basculé. Un peu comme un Claudel derrière un pilier de Notre-Dame. C'est fait. Je me sens différent.

Le Grand Patakès
- le Premier Ministre, de Villepin, veut introduire un nouveau type de contrat sensé aidé les jeunes à trouver plus facilement du boulot en permettant aux patrons de licencier plus facilement pendant deux ans. Bien entendu, cela satisfait parfaitement le MEDEDF ; bien entendu, cela n'aidera que ceux qui ont une qualification, et le problème en France, c'est le manque de qualification des jeunes. Bien entendu, il y aura des tonnes d'abus sans contrôle possible ou presque. Bien entendu, et Villepin l'a déjà affirmé publiquement, le but est d'étendre le CNE et le CPE à tout le monde pour en faire le nouveau CDI.
- Villepin considère qu'à chaque fois qu'on dialogue avec les syndicats, on va dans le mur ; que la France est inréformable si on lui demande son avis ; il s'asseoit donc sur la Loi Fillon imposant que toute modification au code du travail soit précédée de discussions avec les partenaires sociaux, et pond tout seul dans son coin son projet.
- les syndicats commencent à râler, ce qui est parfaitement normal puisque Villepon a fait fi de la Loi...
- Villepin passe en force, shuntant toute négociation pour faire aboutir au plus vite son projet
- dès le lendemain du vote, tout capote. Les syndicats d'étudiants et de salariés sont furieux et ne pardonnent pas ni la méthode, ni le projet.
- après que le trou de mémoire du Conseil Constitutionnel sur les engagements internationaux de la France vis-à-vis de l'OIT, Chirac promulgue la Loi. Dès sa publication au JO 24 heures plus tard, la Loi s'applique, des CPE peuvent être signés légalement.
- mais Chirac ne peut complètement sauver la face et la mise de son Premier Ministre (qui en sait beaucoup trop sur la Chiraquie pour être débarqué comme un malpropre) et calmer le jeu en même temps. Il promulgue et demande - en contradiction avec toutes ses prérogatives constitutionnelles - de suspendre pour demander à l'UMP de bosser sur une nouvelle mouture du projet. Une telle suspension de la Loi n'est pas prévue par la Constitution, et personne ne râle. Le Conseil Constitutionnel ne rappelle même pas à l'ordre le Président de la République, la gauche ne le saisit même pas en procédure d'urgence (mais est-ce même possible ??? 60 députés ou sénateurs peuvent le saisir sur la Constitutionnalité d'une Loi, mais là ce n'est plus le problème...)
- Le Premier Ministre est tellement shunté que Chirac est obligé de recevoir Sarkozy à l'Elysée pour bien montrer aux journalistes qu'il lui a demandé de travailler avec et pour Villepin. La méthode du gouvernement - le passage en force - est totalement déconsidérée, il s'agit en fait d'un désaveu MAJEUR pour un Premier Ministre si peu doué pour le dialogue qu'il traite régulièrement et publiquement parlementaires et syndicalistes de "pauvres connards".
- Sarkozy a bien compris que le dossier est explosif au point de pouvoir LUI couter la présidentielle. Le projet sera vidé de toute sa substance et on redémarrera sur des bases saines quand Villepin sera satellisé. On compte sur les vacances de Pâques à la fin de la semaine pour calmer un peu le jeu...
- Borloo, n'écoutant que son maître le Chi, demande à tout ce qui compte dans le pays de ne pas signer de CPE. Ce faisant, il s'expose à une peine de 5 ans de prison et 75.000 euros d'amende pour, étant dépositaire de l'autorité publique et agissant dans l'exercice de ses fonctions, avoir pris des mesures destinées à faire échec à l'exécution de la Loi, conformément à l'article article 432-1 du Code pénal... Chirac, en proposant lui-même cet artifice, foule au pied la Constitution dont il est le garant. Un cas de haute trahison dépendant de l'article 68 de la Constitution ?

Tragique tragédie #2
Je viens de finir le bouquin de Giesbert. Pas mal. Incomplet, en particulier sur la chûte du dauphin Gaymard, ou les liens familiaux de Chirac avec la banque française. Mais bon, somme toute un très bon bouquin. Clairement, Chirac en prend plein la tronche ; mais il en prend plein la tronche sur le mode "Qui aime bien châtie bien". Par contre, Villepin se fait allumer comme pas un seul autre politicien se fait allumer dans le livre. Si Giesbert en fait se lamente sur Chirac, il tire à boulets rouges sur Villepin, et avec force arguments. Juppé et Sarkozy s'en sortent avec les honneurs, et pour être franc un prestige un peu réhaussé, même pour Juppé "droit dans ses bottes". En fait, Sarkozy en sort même plus qu'avec les honneurs : il affirme clairement son libéralisme, son ambition, mais même Raffarin, qui n'était pas son plus fidèle soutien, et Juppé, tout de même un rival potentiel, reconnaissent qu'il est "réglo". Intéressant...
Giesbert n'en est pas plus un bonhomme supportable, mais son bouquin est bon. A lire avec des grosses pincettes, mais on apprend beaucoup de choses, et quelques fois même des choses intéressantes. Les informations savoureuses ne sont pas les plus intéressantes ; lisez le livre en prenant votre temps...

Chirac à la télé : encore bravo
En dix minutes de parole, Chirac a réussi à renforcer les manifestations, la détermination des manifestants, réunifier la gauche dans la bataille, se ridiculiser totalement dans la presse étrangère, prendre à contre-pied une grande partie des députés UMP, se foutre du Parlement en "bloquant" une loi promulguée sans aucune base constitutionnelle. Wow. Vraiment balaise...
Je ne vois plus qu'une seule sortie pour Chirac : la dissolution
