Did the US want to install a modern democracy in Afghanistan ?

The Loya Jirga has adopted the new Constitution. And I don't think this can be called a victory...

  • First article (excerpts) : Afghanistan is an Islamic Republic
  • Second article (excerpts) : the religion of the State is the sacred religion of Islam. Other religions' believers are free to practice their religion in the limits of the Law
  • Third article (excerpts) : the beliefs and dispositions of the sacred religion of Islam are above all laws in Afghanistan and no law can go against them

Welcome to the 21st century. By the way, if you want to keep your folks in the 16th century, that's ok. And thanks for the oil pipe-line and the heroïn market. Oh, and in the meantime, Bin Laden is still running.

Malraux, wake up, you were right.

I would much prefer that the US let the Afghans write their own consitiution rather than enforce something more "American". I government founded and run by true Islamic principles (not those of bin Laden, etc.) can form a wonderful basis for a stable and compassionate government, especially since the constitution expressly allows freedom of religion compatible with the laws of the country (something America, France, etc. also do).
If the US enforced something the Afghans were not generally happy with, the end result would be just another failure.
The US for example was founded by largely Christian leaders, and many of the laws are derived from Christien and British law, but that has not hampered freedom of religion.
