Three things

- The new 25-members Europe started very badly today... Ireland currently holds the Union's presidency, and the Irish Prime Minister invited European Union's officials to an ecumenic religious ceremony, with a priest, a rabbi and an imam, to bless the new European Union. Ireland, where religion is so strong it can block abortion and where people kill each other in the name of religion, started what journalists call "the new Europe", that new Europe trying to forge a Constitution where all references to religion were refused, with a religious ceremony! That's is NOT the Europe I want, I am telling you, and I think that what happened today is a SHAME. The last words of my grand-father were "a life of fight against the religious and look, they're coming back". I am his grand-son, no doubt about it.

- starting tomorrow a week of sunny vacation in Tunisia; the glazblog will remain silent.

The way I understand it the acknowledgement of religion in the ceremony is due to the general fear in the new members (especially poland) that the EU will eradicate their values and religion. They look at countries like Germany and France, and they see countries where religion is in serious decline. They want to know it's possible to be truly part of Europe and religious at the same time. Hence it makes sense to officially make a statement in favour of religious freedom.

Ce pays est plein de contradictions. Il y a 20 ans, le PNB etait equivalent a celui de la Grece, les ecoles etaient toutes religieuses et les preservatifs en vente en pharmacie et sur ordonnance !
Depuis les choses changent, mais il faut du temps. Pour les moyens de contraception, c'est quasiement la même chose qu'en France, pour les ecoles, ca evolue tres vite (surtout grace/à cause des nombreux cas de pretres pedophiles). L'avortement reviens au vote a l'assemblée ou en referendum tous les 5-7 ans. La derniere fois, il fut rejetté de peu, beaucoup pensent que la prochaine sera la bonne.
Et pour finir nos "amis" de l'autre coté de la frontière, crée par les britaniques en 1921. (Rappel: La Republique d'Irlande a la presidence europeenne, les 6 county du nord, faussement appelé Ulster, font partie du Royaume-Uni) Dire que c'est une guerre de religion est proprement reducteur. L'intifada est elle une guerre de religion ? C'est principalement 2 communautés, l'une aillant eu le pouvoir absolu et refusant de ceder ses privileges et l'autre aspirant à plus d'egalité sociale, en utilisant des moyens allant du bulletin de vote à la voiture piegée.
La religion est en tres grand declin. Nombre d'eglises sont revendues pour être utilisées en residence ou en pub, voire même en mosquée ! Neanmois ce changement est tres recent et les dirigeants politique de ce pays ont tous recité leur priere avec de commencer leur cours de math ou de geographie lors de leur classes primaires. Attendons encore une ou deux decennies qu'une nouvelle generation arrive au pouvoir. Personellement je suis humaniste et donc je fais confiance au peuple de ce pays pour choisir la bonne voie.

These are just stupid politicians saying stupid things ("Nice or death" and other crap).

I'm a Muslim, I think (for me know) its enlightning its guides too. The problem with religion is people. Personally without religion I think things will get much worse.
The condition of people will not change unless they change themselves.
From my point of view Islam can complement and help one to excel, and help people to reform also - I hope I still will be free to hold thses views in 10 years time
its about freedom if you understand it properly - not about people using it for power.
Anyway these are my thoughts before the mind police get formed.
marcoos: I'll assume you live in Poland and I can take your word for that. I'm just repeating what I heard in the press. Ofcourse there's no way for me to factcheck it, but it sounded reasonable.
But if that wasn't the reason, why would they do it? It was an ecumenical ceremony, so it's hard the imagine the reason would be to advance someone's personal religion. If that isn't the reason, it has to be inherently political.
