Composer update
By glazou on Wednesday 27 September 2006, 19:02 - Nvu - Permalink
- Composer is not a Mozilla Corporation product
- it's a Mozilla.org project
- I will then stop referring to mozilla composer or m/c and only use the name Composer starting today
- but in order to make a more visible difference with Seamonkey Composer, we may need another name for the project, so you are kindly invited to suggest a name in the comments to this post.
- your suggestion should not already be used by another piece of software
- think international. Example: "sopher" means book in hebrew, that could fit ; but that's too close to "suffer"...
- it must be possible to design a logo from that name

Comments
Rembrant/Renoir/Matisse/Vincent/Joconde
Gutember would be nicer but confusing with the project
What about ``webotype'' (a la ``linotype'')?
Why is this needed? Can't it be "Mozilla Composer", whether "project" or "product"?
OK, some suggestions:
Web Maker
Web Composer
Web Orchestrator
Web-Code Creator
STUDIOWEB, WEBSTUDIO
En vrac :
NewKomp, nKomp : pour nouveau Composer
Kvu : pour prolonger la notoriété de Nvu
Glazeditor, Glazedit : pour l'ego
PencilWeb : le stylo du Web
How about:
- semaphore
- shakespeare, cervantes, hemingway
- ledger, tablet
- haiku
speaking of books, it might be interesting to to include "script" or "scriptus" in the name ?
Something like "SriptoWeb" or "Scriptanet", whatever
When I refer to your project, I use "MC2"...
Name: Stylish
Why: Because Composer will support CSS as far as the standards go. And no more frames or FP97-looking sites.
The only downside; a small utility for Firefox is already called Stylish - I actually didn't know this until I searched.
Disruptive Composer
SympaWeb
GlazComposer
3W Builder
composeIt
Compositor
Web Monitor
Glazmaniacoskizophrenic
What about Cascade? I mean, the big new thing is all the CSS editing, right?
- Chris
For the record, "sopher" is Hebrew for "scribe" or "writer". "Sepher" is Hebrew for "book".
I guess recursive algorithms are rather passé, or I would suggest Zinc (Zinc Is Not Composer)
Nomographe
Greenhouse
Mr Glazman,
In my opinion, you should avoid names that refer to any other known and Gecko-based ones like Nvu, Composer and KompoZer.
Using an English name will hurt internationalization.
Using a famous artist name could help. So:
Picasso
Da Vinci
Koivu
Jordan
Web Weasel
Web Marten
Silver Fox
Web Fox (my preference)
Gérard
Cuneiform
Did you, by any chance, get a letter from the Mozilla corp about them defending their trademark?
To respond to a couple of comments above: "Mozilla" is not a trademark of the Mozilla Corporation, it's a trademark of the Mozilla Foundation. However in practice we reserve the use of the term "Mozilla" in product names to applications that are shipped by the Mozilla Corporation and are considered official "products". Thus, for example, the official name of Firefox is "Mozilla Firefox"; ditto for Thunderbird. However we don't use "Mozilla" as part of the names for SeaMonkey, Camino, Sunbird, Minimo, etc.
Because of this policy, and also because of the great potential for confusion with the "Mozilla Composer" component of the Mozilla Suite (not to mention Composer in SeaMonkey), I asked Daniel to please not use "Mozilla" as part of the name for his new application, and he very nicely agreed to do so. Note that the Foundation is helping the SeaMonkey and Sunbird teams register trademarks for their product names and logos (at their request), and I'd be glad to do the same in this case, if a suitable name and logo are created.
(Note that "Composer" is too generic to be a good trademark. Whatever people think of "Sopher", it does have the advantage of being much less generic, and thus would be more likely to be usable as a trademark.)
How about "Spider"? The spider is the one who weaves the web
Comme je n'ai pas beaucoup d'idées, je propose Cydonia, "le « visage de Mars", dernièrement mis à nu par l'esa...
Haiku isn't useable it's already the name of an OS.
In order to complete the browser/email/editor trilogy, and after FireFox and ThunderBird, I propose to call Composer "FeatherSnake".
Besides, Feather goes with Quill, as in Quill-pen: good name for a Composer.
X-Writer
iCss
WebRunner (thinking of XulRunner)
X-Runner
BladeRunner
CompRunner

All the good names are gone

- Please, no "Glaz"-related names. I'm sure Daniel has enough trouble being humble and modest
- Please, no names which are similar to those of unrelated MoFo/MoCo products (e.g. WebRunner is like XULRunner; Web Fox is like Firefox)
- Names of painters make it seem like a paint program.
Daniel: remember to do lots of Googling before you make your final choice!
"Zinc" sounds OK to me...
I'd like a name that has a similar feel as the other Mozilla Foundation general-purpose standalone applications (SeaMonkey, Firefox, Thunderbird and Sunbird). Thus I'd propose a combination of a noun and an animal name.
However, I'm currently lacking a good sugestion...
IMHO :
- refrain from names containing "Web", "CSS" or anything pertaining to the actual technologies. It's been overused and may end up cliché.
- refrain from names of famous people - too me that sounds like a "beta product" name, just what "Longhorn" was to Vista.
- maybe refrain from putting two words together, or worse, word+verb - too close to DreamWeaver or GoLive or FrontPage (or maybe that's the point ! Ack ! Go for it then !)
That's it for now.
Headline.
At INRIA, zinc was long ago used for Zinc Is Not Caml. I *think* it became Caml-Light before the first release thought.
I like FeatherSnake, but we can imagine a variation like FeatherFish (which risks being shortened into FF, and that's bad).
Quick, use Ice Weasel before debian does!
Seriously though, how about:
- Weaver (Bird or Ant)
- Scales
- Salute
- Phallanx
- Compass
- Silkworm
While we're here, I prefer FINC (Finc Is Not Composer)...
Compozilla, CompoXULa [kompozula]
Hum,
j'avais proposé un petit délire sur geckozone que je modifie légèrement et réitère ici : W.E.B (Wysiwyg Editing and Browse). Désolé pour la deuxième fois...
Heu...

Noms qui me viennent à l'esprit :
- NVU NG (pour Next Generation)
- Editor
- EditZilla
- XulEdit
C'est tout, désolé, je tourne à vide
FWIW, Shakespeare is more or less taken. On the mac, the biggest DC++ client is named "Shakespeer".
LINK (Link Is Not Kompozer)

Mayari
Sarpanit

DINC = Disruptive, Innovative and Natural Composer.
Otherwise, maybye the name of an architect would be more significant than a painter ? Palladio sounds well on my ears.
or Imhotep, his name means "the one who comes in peace".
see fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc...
DIMC = Disruptive, Innovative and Mozilla-Based Composer.
Web Spinner
MidaStyle
As someone wrote before - Cascade - it just suits it
